About Jammu and Kashmir Elections

Unlike any other states in India, in the Instrument of Accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India, Maharaja Hari Singh accedes only very few aspects of Jammu and Kashmir state to the Government of India as a Dominion authority. They are the power of the Dominion to make laws was restricted to the matters mentioned in the Schedule namely Defence, Foreign Affairs and Communications and a few ancillary subjects specified in the schedule.

Thus, only J&K’s Legislative Assembly is the only capable authority to change the term of the J&K state Legislative assembly. In Jammu region Bharatiya Janata Party won 25 out of 37 seats and this happened only because the Jammu people believed that BJP will come to powerand work for the development of their region unlike the earlier leaders or parties who always paid more interest in the Kashmir valley. The BJP had won 3 out of 6 Lok Sabha seats from J&K during Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly elections. During the time of floods the people were infuriated by National Conference government and the government was wiped out. The Congress there had still antipathy towards it and they weren’t winning either of states in India.

Between Bharatiya Janata Party and Peoples Democratic Party, extensive campaigning at the time of elections and the agendas and prior work done makes sure who the winning political party will be in J&K. Jammu is divided into 3 parts, Jammu area has 37 seats. Valley 46 seats, Leh 4 seats.  There are 87 assembly constituencies and 6 Lok Sabha constituencies.
