The elections held in 2017 in the Indian state of Manipur witnessed BJP bagging second northeastern state where the party chief of North East claimed support of 32 MLAs to form government. Bharatiya Janata Party had its own 21 MLAs and secured support of 11 others adding up to 32 legislators. 31 are needed to form government in the 60-member Assembly, Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after meeting Governor Najma Heptullah.
The poll in 2017 projected a massive increase in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s vote share in Manipur from 2.1% in 2012 to 32.1% in 2017; while the three-time Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh led Congress is projected to fall from 42.4% to 31.3% in voteshare.In 2002 Current CM of Manipur N. Biren Singh was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manipur as the Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party. In 2007 he formally joined Congress Party and retained his Assembly Seat.The whole concept of political game changed in 2016 where the former Congress MLAs, N. Biren and Francis Ngajokpa were warmly received by Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2017 official dates were announced for regional election. Manipur has its schedule in March 2017, where the game of actual governance started.
Prime Minister blamed Manipur’s Congress government for not taking the necessary steps to end the economic blockade and promised to end if BJP forms the government. In the process of elections, BJP got 21 seats in Manipur which was first time ever. The election result of 2017 had a fantastic performance where BJP was well placed to form next Manipur government.
15th March 2017 N. Biren Singh was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur. And on 20th March 2017, Economic Blockade was officially lifted, where, 130 day Manipur Blockade came to an end ahead of the newly sworn in Chief Minister’s test.
