The major national political parties in the state of Meghalaya are the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Following are the most famous political parties in Meghalaya.
With just 2 seats in Meghalaya, Bharatiya Janata Party usurped Power in the state. Conrad Sangma leads BJP ally National People’s Party (NPP). The Congress emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya as votes were counted for assembly elections in three northeast states. Congress was the largest party with no party getting a majority, but failed to get support to form government.
United Democratic Party (UDP): – This is a recognized political party in the state of Meghalaya, India. It is under the leadership of Donkupar Roy. The founding member of the party is E. K. Mawlong. Political ideologies followed are Regionalism and Populism.
People’s Democratic Front (PDF): – The PDF was founded in 2017 and is led by P. N. Syiem and Auspicious L. Mawphlang. With an aim to uplift tribal of the state he party is a part of the North East Democratic Alliance.
Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP): – the president of HSPDP is Mr. H. S. Lyngdoh. The party is in Alliance with National Democratic Alliance. It has 2/60 seats in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. This is one of the most famous political parties in Meghalaya.
Garo National Council (GNC): – The basic orientation of the political party is to fight for the creation of a new state Garoland of a Garo majority state. This is with the intention of carving out three districts of Meghalaya, West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, and south Garo Hills.
Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM): – the party had a merger with United Democratic Party (Meghalaya) in 2011. The political party of India has Paul Lyngdoh as its party president.
