Female Politicians of India

Women have has a long history of struggle for acquiring position at any field. Be it politics or education. Yet,  India as a country has served well and respectfully the women of her region to help them gain that stature. Since the early 18th century, world has witnessed examples of great ‘heroines’ in the true sense. India too has in its store a number of prominent women leaders. They have hold posts like chief minister of any state, Prime Minister, President, governor of any state and various other posts. Some of the famous female politicians are enlisted below:

Sonia Gandhi: The widow of former Prime minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, Soniacame into politics quite late. She is the working president of All India Congress party and the chairperson of UPA. Her being an Italian raised several eyebrows to her active participation in the Indian politics. Yet, Mrs. Gandhi was determined not to step back after joining the party in 1997 and still continues with the same prominence and influence.

Sushma Swaraj: Women holding prestigious posts with grandeur and elegance are a pride in themselves. Sushma Swaraj isn’t an exception. She is the present external affairs minister of India and the right hand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She became the youngest cabinet minister in India, at the age of 25 only.

Mamata Banerjee: Popularly known as ‘didi’, Mamata Banerjee is the first woman CM of West Bengal. She has fame and is among the most popular female politicians of India due to her ‘fear not’ and blatant attitude. Ms. Banerjee had this extraordinary capacity to topple down the 34 years CPM rule in West Bengal and grab the position of CM.

Mayawati: The four times chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati Das, consecutively won the position and ruled the state’s heart for her simple background and her being the first woman CM of UP. Hailing from an upper cast Dalit family, Mayawati founded the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1984. She was greatly influenced by her mentor, Kanshi Ram.

SmritiIrani: The former education minister, Smriti Irani recently holds the post of Textiles Ministers and Vice President of BJP. Initially, she came to fame due to her interest in modelling and being a known face of the television. Later on her taste in fashion got rephrased to politics.

Vasundhara Raje Scindia: Coming from a royal Gwalior family, Vasundhara Raje was the first Indian woman to be elected the Chief Minister of any state. Recently she is the CM of Rajasthan. She first sworn in as CM in 2003 and rose to fame and popularity due to her oneness with the state.

Nirmala Sitharaman: The pride of India, Ms. Sitharaman is the second defence minister of India, since independence. She joined BJP in 2008 and served as the party’s spokesperson.

Sasikala Natarajan: She became the CM of Tamil Nadu after the sudden demise of J Jayalalitha. Though Sasikala continued in office amongst several controversies.

Mehbooba Mufti: The incumbent CM of Jammu and Kashmir, she sworn in the post as the second Muslim woman. She is one of the famous woman politicians of India who chose to come out of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s shadow and create an identity of her own.

Dimple Yadav: She is country’s first uncontested MP, the spouse of Akhilesh Yadav. Dimple is considered the factor behind her husband’s success.
