The US Role in the Migrant Crisis, There is a need for Washington must show compassion to the Migrants at the US-Mexico border that its foreign policy had crafted earlier.
Denying the retreat that the step taken is not co-relating to human rights commitments where, US has announced recently the withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The US ambassador to UN, Nikki Haley was quoted as saying. According to Haley the immediate step has been taken in the interest of proving their commitment which doesn’t allow them’’ to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of Human-rights”. The chronic bias against Israel is said to be the core reason of the withdrawal. The statement of the ambassador clashes with the reality happening on the border with the Mexico.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Trump administration instituted a “Zero Tolerance” immigration policy in April, which stated the families crossing the US-Mexico border without proper authorization including asylum seekers would be separated. Parents faced criminal prosecution and children were sent to detention centres. With the effect of policy, in less than 2 months more than 2,300 children have been separated from their families. Much to the horror, there is no process to re-unite with families.
With a gut-wrenching recordings of separated children from their parents, intensified the national and global outrage about the Trump administration’s inhuman policy of separating children from their parents, made US President Donald Trump sign an executive order on June 20 to stop the practice of separating families, while still maintaining the Zero-tolerance policy. Though, Trump’s orders will run into issues with the Flores agreement, which says the migrant children cannot be in detention for more than 20 days, but to this the fate of 2,300 children are yet to be decided.
Trump’s order is being judged as cruel policy and the President is being compared to the likes of dictators like Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler. The fascination of Trump with Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un is also in question, where authoritarian regimes chose to emulate the actions of Stalin and Hitler in his immigration policy. Trump has justified the policy by stating, that “if you cross this border unlawfully, you will be prosecuted. If you don’t like that, don’t smuggle children. Then we will not prosecute you”.
America’s behavior is seen as a shameless display of double standards, as it accuses the UNHRC of hypocritical behavior but US has no qualms about the cruelty meted out to the migrants.
It’s been said that, The United States of America should have a moral responsibility for the plight of the citizens of Central America. Until it brings meaningful reparations improving lives, and welcome them in their state instead of treating them as criminals at the border and destroying families.
