List of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh

The state of Uttar Pradesh was incepted on 26 January 1950 and since then the state has witnessed many of its Head till date. Previously the state was known as the United Provinces.

Govind Ballabh Pant – Pant became the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and was one of the foremost political leaders of Uttar Pradesh. An Indian Freedom Fighter, Pant belonged to the Indian National Congress and has served his term from 26 January 1950 – 27 December 1954.

Sampurnanand – He was the second Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and has served his term from Indian National Congress i.e. from 28 December 1954 – 7 December 1960.

Chandra Bhanu Gupta – Chandra Bhanu Gupta was the third Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and was a prominent figure in Indian Independence Movement. He served his term from 7 December 1960 – 14 March 1962, 14 March 1962 – 1 October 1963, 14 March 1967 – 2 April 1967, 26 February 1969 – 17 February 1970. He belonged to the Indian National Congress.

Sucheta Kriplani – Sucheta Kriplani was the India’s first Woman Chief Minister serving as the Head of the Uttar Pradesh government. She was one of the known figures in Indian Independence Movement. She held her office from 2 October 1963 – 13 March 1967 and belonged to the Indian National Congress.

Charan Singh – Charan Singh was the fifth Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and is commonly referred as the ‘Champion of India’s Peasants’. He belonged to the Janata Party (Secular) and served his term from 3 April 1967 – 25 February 1968, 18 February 1970 – 1 October 1970.

Tribhuvana Narayana Singh – Tribhuvana was the seventh Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and remained in office from 18 October 1970 – 3 April 1971. He belonged to the Indian National Congress (O).

Kamlapati Tripathi – Tripathi was a known freedom fighter and also a senior Congress leader. He was the eighth CM of UP and remained CM of Uttar Pradesh from 4 April 1971 – 13 June 1973. He was an Indian National Congress member.

Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna – Hemwati was the ninth CM of Uttar Pradesh and was an Indian National Congress leader. He served as CM from 8 November 1973 – 4 March 1974, 5 March 1974 – 29 November 1975.

N. D. Tiwari – One of the most popular political leaders in Uttar Pradesh, N.D. Tiwari has been CM of UP thrice and once of Uttarakhand. He is the only CM to have served two states as Chief Minister. He remained CM from 21 January 1976 – 30 April 1977, 3 August 1984 – 10 March 1985, 11 March 1985 – 24 September 1985, 25 June 1988 – 5 December 1989. He belonged to the Indian National Congress.

Ram Naresh Yadav – A lawyer by profession, Ram Naresh Yadav was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 23 June 1977 – 28 February 1979. He belonged to the Janata Party.

Banarsi Das – Banarsi Das was popularly known as Babu Banarsi Das who was the eleventh Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He remained CM from 28 February 1979 – 17 February 1980. He belonged to the Janata Party.

V. P. Singh – One of the famous political leaders of Uttar Pradesh, V.P. Singh was 7th Prime Minister of India. He remained CM of Uttar Pradesh from 9 June 1980 – 19 July 1982. He belonged to the Indian National Congress.

Sripati Mishra – Sripati was the thirteenth CM of Uttar Pradesh from 19 July 1982 – 2 August 1984 and he belonged to the Indian National Congress.

Vir Bahadur Singh – Vir Bahadur was the fourteenth CM of Uttar Pradesh from 24 September 1985 – 24 June 1988, he represented the Indian National Congress. He was an active participant in the Quit India Movement.

Mulayam Singh Yadav – One of the most powerful political leaders in Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav is the founder of the Samajwadi Party and has served three non-consecutive terms as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was also a Minister of Defence of India. He was the fifteenth Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh i.e. from 5 December 1989 – 24 June 1991, 4 December 1993 – 3 June 1995, 29 August 2003 – 13 May 2007. He was from Janata Dal at the time of CM.

Kalyan Singh – He has served two terms as the CM of UP and is the sixteenth Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is one of the most popular political leaders in Uttar Pradesh. He served his term from 24 June 1991 – 6 December 1992, 21 September 1997 – 28 October 2000. He belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Mayawati – Mayawati is the National President of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and has served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for four separate terms. She remained CM from 3 June 1995 – 18 October 1995, 21 March 1997 – 21 September 1997, 3 May 2002 – 29 August 2003, 13 May 2007 – 15 March 2012.

Ram Prakash Gupta – Ram Prakash Gupta was the eighteenth Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He served his office from 12 November 1999 – 28 October 2000.

Rajnath Singh – Rajnath Singh is one of the most famous political leaders of Uttar Pradesh and is currently the Home Minister of India. He was the nineteenth CM of UP. He remained CM of Uttar Pradesh from 28 October 2000 – 8 March 2002. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Akhilesh Yadav – Akhilesh Yadav is one of the youngest Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh and is currently the President of the Samajwadi Party. He was the twentieth Chief Minister of UP. He remained CM of Uttar Pradesh for a brief period of 15 March 2012 – 19 March 2017.

Yogi Adityanath – Yogi is one of the most popular political leaders in Uttar Pradesh and is an Indian mink and also Hindu Nationalist politician. He is the twenty first and the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He assumed office from 19 March 2017 and belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
