Political Parties in Punjab

The Indian state of Punjab has had strongest of strong political parties who had their own share of vote and governance out of which following are the most famous political parties in Punjab.

Dalit Kisan Dal – This political party was formed after a split with Lok Bhalai Party 2001. The motive of formation of DKD was to fight for better conditions foe peasants and Dalits.

Indian National Congress – Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee is an affiliate of the Indian National Congress and is currently the government of the state of Punjab. At present it consists of 117 members directly elected from 117 single-seat constituencies.

Shiromani Akali Dal –This particular party is headed by Sukhbir Singh Badal. It is one of the most influential and powerful political party in India relating to Sikh. Shiromani Akali Dal also stands as the most famous political party in Punjab. The basic ideology followed by the party is to be vocal about the Sikh issues and also supports the concept of politics and religion going hand in hand.

General Samaj Party – in March 2003 GSP, gained 21 seats in the Gurdaspur Municipal Corporation. GSP is a political party in Punjab which was founded in 2002 and it opposes affirmative action quotas.

Bharatiya Janata Party BJP is one of the most powerful political parties in Punjab. BJP was in coalition with Shiromani Akali Dal when in government in Punjab. The coalition didn’t give fruitful results, and anti-incumbency wave against SAD for drug menace played crucial role in BJP losing its grip in the region.

Bahujan Samaj Party – BSP is the third largest national political party in India. It is one of the popular political parties in Punjab. BSP contested on all 117 seats in Punjab but it led to an embarrassment for the party in Punjab. Party’s founder Kanshi Ram had his base in Punjab, and was also MP from Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha seat in 1996.

Aam Aadmi Party – Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab has been looked as the biggest loser in the recent Assembly polls in comparison to other political competitors. No doubt that Aam Aadmi Party was one of the most famous political parties in Punjab but various factors led to a tragic defeat of the party in Punjab. Out of 117 AAP have 20 seats in Punjab Legislative Assembly.

Reservation Virodhi Dal – The party was founded in October 1999 by the General Category Welfare Federation of Punjab. The party supports the opposing acts to affirmative actions quotas and reservations.
