Malegaon Blasts accused, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur joins BJP, may contest from Bhopal

Malegaon blasts accused Pragya Singh Thakur joined the Bharatiya Janata Party today (Wednesday, April 17) reported ANI. She is likely to be the party’s candidate from Bhopal, where the Congress has fielded senior leader and former MP CM Digvijaya Singh.

Though there is no official announcement from the party yet, Thakur told reporters that Digvijaya Singh was no challenge for her. “I would contest and win for sure,” she added. Thakur visited the BJP office in Bhopal today to meet senior leaders such as Ram Lal, Prabhat Jha and Narottam Mishra.

“Whoever is working against the nation, we all would fight against them and would defeat them,” Singh told reporters. “Jab rashtra surakshit hoga, hum sab surakhsit honge. Tab hi hum apna kaam kar payenge {When the nation is safe, we all would be safe and would be able to discharge our duties}.”

Alok Sanjar, the current BJP parliamentarian from Bhopal, said the party fully backed her and would ensure her victory from the seat. “No allegation was proved against her. A woman was harassed. Now it’s time for revenge,” Sanjar told the media.

On September 29, 2008, at least six people died and several were injured in two blasts in Maharashtra’s Malegaon. Thakur is one of the accused in the case. She has been charged under Section 18 (conspiracy) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code. Currently, she is out on bail.

Thakur, who is known for her incendiary comments and speeches, had been associated with the radical Hindu outfit Abhinav Bharat and Durga Vahini, which is the women’s wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

“We all will fight together with all those who are conspiring against the nation and defeat them,” said Sadhvi Pragya, alleging a conspiracy to frame her.

Digvijaya Singh, who has always been vocal against the BJP and is also one among those who now and again uses the term, ‘Saffron Terror’ will be contesting the Lok Sabha Polls from Bhopal over the challenge by MP CM Kamal Nath.

The BJP has never lost in Bhopal since 1989, though it has a sizeable Muslim population. Digvijaya Singh was asked by his party colleague, Chief Minister Kamal Nath, to contest from tough seats like Bhopal or Indore, where the Congress hasn’t won in years. Challenge accepted, was Digvijaya Singh’s response, and he was named for Bhopal.
