Political History of Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh which includes a big chuck of Gangetic Plain was created as United Provinces in 1937 during British rule and after independence it was renamed as Uttar Pradesh in 1950. Indian National Congress (INC) which was umbrella organization and brought all the freedom fighters on the samestage against British rule.it consolidated all the political ideas and gained a lot public support. Since there was no potent opponent during, it got majority in Constituent Assembly election. This trend continued in legislative assembly election too, and INC got to rule Uttar Pradesh in for more than two decades.

After the fourth assembly election in 1967 Congress party was divided on Nehru’s soviet-style economic reform and Charan Singh with the help of Raj Narain and Ram Manohar Lohia become Chief Minister of UP by forming a party named BharatiyaKranti Dal at the meeting in Lucknow. His tenure was almost one year and followed by one year of president rule till the next assembly election in 1969.

In the fifth Assembly election Congress got 211 seats and formed the government and tussle among them continued with breakaways and coalitions with some time for president rule too.In 1947’s election Congress got 215 seats out of 425 seats and we see the rise of communism in India with Communist Party of India (CPI) winning 16 seats in elections. Later PM Indira Gandhi declared emergency in 1975 which lasted 21 months and ended in 1977. During this period INC formed government and following almost 2 months of president’s rule. The emergency bestowed PM to suspend elections and curb civil liberties. During this period Indira’s political opponent were jailed, press was censored and lot of state sponsored atrocities were reported which includes forced mass-sterilization campaign. This led to INC’s downfall and reflected in the subsequent election (1977) in which Janata Party defeated INC for the first time in the History of Republic India. In assembly election Janata Party which was amalgamation of INC’s opposing political parties won 352 seats out of 425. This assembly saw Ram Naresh Yadav and Banarasi Das as CM and followed by President rule. In the eighth and ninth assembly election INC formed the government consecutively in 1980 and 1985, which ended in 1989. Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984.

In 1950 RashtriyaSwayemsevakSangh (*RSS) collaborated with Syama Prasad Mukherjee and created a political party Bharatiya Jana Sangh.1977, later right, left, center against congress formed Janata Party in 1977. Later Janata Dal further fragmented into forming Samajwadi Party.in 11th assembly election BJP formed government in 1991 for two years followed by 12th assembly election an alliance with SP and BSP in 1993. In 13th assembly election a turbulence of power was witnessed. In 2007 BSP and in 2012 SP won with full majority.

In 2014 general election BJP won 72 out of 80 seats leaving BSP with humiliating zero seats and SP barely able to save his reputation. Next assembly election is going to take place in early 2017 and it’s not definitely two fronts.
