North East India has been traditionally reluctant to accept Bharatiya Janata Party or any other party in place of Left. Victory in Assam might have been the pivotal point for this attitude, at least for the political class.
The Indigenous Tribal in Tripura has been agitating for a separate state. A delegation of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) will be visiting the Prime Minister’s office to push in their placed demands for a separate state named Tipraland. There has been an indefinite rail and roadblocks in continuation, a group of 14 IPFT members stripped naked as a mark of protest In Tripura West district. The only one connection to the rest of the country, i.e. the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-8) has been held hostage by the IPFT. There has been an ongoing indefinite agitation in the state. The Railway network in West Tripura district’s Khamthingbari has also been blocked.
IPFT, formerly was a member of the North-East Regional Political Front- a group of political parties supporting the NDA- the IPFT is a tribal-based party in Tripura. The party was founded by NC Debbarma, and now the primary demand of the group is Tipraland- a separate created from Tripura. The need or the demand for the separate State comes as the group claims that the tribal population’s identity has largely taken a blow. Soon after the UPA government, gave into demands of bifurcating Andhra Pradseh and promised creation of Telengana, new life was breathed into Tipraland movement.
The rights of the Indigenous Community were exploited and even the formation of an autonomous district, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council was not able to protect the rights of the Indigenous community.
From the past eight years, Tipraland Statehood Demand Day has been observed to keep the ongoing movement alive. In August 2016 the IPFT took out a rally that took a violent turn injuring nearly 100 people. Several vehicles were torched in the agitation between tribal and non-tribal.
