Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was facing severe anti-incumbency in Punjab and the Badals are not having a great reputation at that time. Aam Aadmi Party has made major inroads in growing the support base in Punjab. There is still some confusion regarding the leadership however. On the contrary, Captain Amrinder Singh is popular in Punjab and Congress made him a Chief Ministerial candidate was widely hailed as a winning move itself. The alliance of SAD-BJP have 35% permanent vote bank of villagers and Urban Hindus supporting Right-wing ideology. In 2014 too, SAD-BJP got 6 Lok Sabha seats against strong anti- incumbency. Their vote share was only 29% though. But things have improved over last years.
The only competitor is Congress. It got highest vote share in Lok Sabha elections in 2014 i.e. 33% but they got only 3 seats. Congress too surprised in 2017 elections. The Punjab Legislative Assembly Election was held in 2017 to elect the 117 members of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The voter turnout for the election was 76.83%.
Out of 117 seats 59 seats are needed for a majority win. The elections were swept by Congress by winning 77 seats of the total 117 seats. Aam Aadmi Party won 20 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal won 15 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party won 3 seats and Lok Insaaf Party won 2 seats.
This win by Congress in 2017 saw Captain Amrinder Singh as the Chief Minister of Punjab for the second time. The win was followed by the long-drawn electoral battle which saw politicians attacking each other on issues from drug abuse to rampant corruption.
